Nissan say that this whole unit needs replacing and your not able to disassemble the stick/selector
This how to shows you how to remove the stick either for repair of painting of the trim

Put the stick neutral and pull the plastic part down

Now remove the clip

Now just grab hold of the stick and pull upwards

All the trim removed

Very helpful. I expected to be able to adjust a rod length to correct a failure to stop at 'D' but the copper wires running down the shaft indicates the knob is actually a sealed unit electrical switch assembly so I'll likely have to live with it.
