i have a 11 plate nissan note,but it as an intermiterent fault.it will not start,when i turn the key and the petrol gauge goes to 0.this can happen when the engine is cold or hot.nissan have had car back but cant reconise the fault,this keeps happening.any ideas!

First thing to check is battery condition, try to read the battery voltage during a start cycle (turning the engine over) if it falls way below 11v then it needs replacing. next on the list would be the fuel pump and sender unit (all in one) together with the power and earth connections to it.

The fuel pump sounds about right, you may have a dodgy fuel pump relay causing the pump not to prime
the fuse and relay are located in the ipdm (biege box under the bonnet behind the n/s headlamp)

As above get the battery and alternator checked too


either way its still under warrenty get nissan to sort it out

sounds to me like a sticking starter motor that is sucking all the power out of the system which causes the fuel gauge to drop, do any other power things fail when this happens, ie lights, interior light, ignition lights etc

used to be a common problem on older cars particularly with weaker batteries
