If anybody can help please. I have tried the usual tricks but to no avail. thank you.

Check the battery is in properly- the flat side with the writing goes into the shell first, and there is a small springy contact that grips the side and connects it to the circuit board. It is possible for the contact to fall out when changing the battery.

With the type of batteries that fit into the key fob, you should never touch both the flat surfaces at the same time as this can discharge the battery and render it useless. It happened to me when i swapped out a BIOS battery in my pc a while ago.
Always handle these type of batteries by the edges or, preferably, wear latex gloves or similar,or use plastic tweezers.
