Hi folks. It seems my A/C has packed up, the A/C light on the controls comes on, the cabin blower works, Ive checked the A/C fuse in the fusebox under the dash, but othwise the A/C seems goosed.

Are there any hints or tips to narrow down the problem? Im assuming there are no other fuses related to the system?? The only tell-tale sign I can see (if Im thinking right) is that when I switch the A/C on, the revs dont drop at all !! Which to me suggests the compressor is not starting up?!?!?! But any other pointers would be appreciated.

TIA Tommo

probably needs a recharge...if it doesn't get used regularly the seals dry out and you lose refrigerant slowly.
Ahh... your reply just reminded me. Another question... assuming for a sec the compressor is not starting up... Is it interlocked??? i.e. No refridgerant = low or no pressure = compressor would refuse to start.

I foresee a diagnostic and recharge for ~ £60 versus a new compressor for ~£300. I know which one I would prefer

you could top it up yourself from one of the off the shelf cans (make sure it's the right type though) I've done it on my previous cars just fine, the system is so small on the Note that the can will do many top ups.

Sounds tempting !! I wouldnt know where to begin though !i.e. how to measure the pressure, where to recharge it, how do I know the system is "full" , etc, etc

Illl have a nosey in the Workshop Manual Flash sent out.. see it its in there

Full instructions come with the can as does a gauge, you will need to identify which is the fill point though, minesbetween the offside headlamp and radiator with a little black plastic cap, if you see two caps it's the one with the larger diameter pipe (low pressure side) if i remember correctly, use R-134a refrigerant.

Hi all, whilst on the subject of air conditioning mine has been in for MOT and service, no advisory's :) Anyway last service they said my AC was due for a recharge (though it seemed fine) so I said yes and off I went and it was done. It went back in a week later for cam - belt change (1.5 DCi SE 06 plate) and all was fine.
I noticed this week HOT and no aircon, though all was working as in little light on, fuse ok no cold air so window open. As I said it's been in for service, oh yes we recharged it last time and they had a look. They say the condenser was distorted and leaking liquid. Now am I being cynical? in front of the radiator, no holes no sign of damage. They may be right but how would it get distorted? I haven't run into anything, damaged when doing the cam belt maybe.... maybe they are guessing the fault as it's leaked the coolant. Regarding a post a little up the list, my compressor doesn't cut in either, used to be able to hear it but I'm guessing that's lack of refrigerant anyway. I've found a web site that does a condensor NEW for £75 + VAT and took it into dealers who have photocopied it. They are supposed to be getting back to me to let me know if it's the right one for my car. Is there any way of finding out part numbers on line cross referenced to chassis numbers? oh yes my New MOT certificate is now just a printed white sheet of A4, looks really tacky compared to the crisp green previous one. Suppose you don't have an MOT now unless the computer says you have so why have a certificate. Progress? BTW I took out my LED sidelights for MOT just in case and ordinary 501 bulbs in there, swapped them back now and and dealer wanted to know how much the new headlight I fitted was as was a clone, no problems with it as it was E marked and saved a few quid that way. 75,000 miles now what to change it for .... Got to go to S of France in August first :) Bye for now John

Re Aircon probs.... following the warm spell last week I took my Note to main dealer for quote to fix dead conditioner. They quoted £65 for a gas up....with no guarantee that this would resolve the prob. I was told that I would still be charged full amount because they would have to put the gas in to check system. I am now checking out the DIY "buy a can"

Repair to Aircon unit
I am sure you will all be happy for me. I took my note to dealer for gassing up and after checking I was told that my unit was damaged and this had caused the gas to leak. A new airconditioning unit was required for my second hand Note, cost over £400! But surprise surprise this was covered under the used car warranty. I had it done last week and....no charge for the gas either.

Air Con not working, anyone got any advice?
Hi I just bought my nissan note dci sve 06 plate, 2 months ago. When I got i the air-con was working fine. However I tried using it a couple of days ago and it is not blowing out cold air. It does give heat if you put the temp up, thus indicating that it is modulating. I have checked the fuse by swithing the 10amp fuse with the air bag one and still no joy. I have read the posts which are helpful so will try again and see that when i put the air con on do the revs go down. Other than that I am stuck. Any suggestions much appreciated.

It could be a leak due to a dodgy seal. Firstly, do you hear the AC 'clutch' engaging when you start?Make sure the fuses are all intact (and put the airbag one back NOW!).
The AC compressor will be audible (at least it is on mine) as it 'cycles' any noise at all.

If the clutch I engaging and the compressor is cycling then you should get it leak tested and regassed by a specialist NOT the local Halfords.

I can recommend Richard at autoaircon in Harrow (he is a mobile aircon specialist).

Hope this helps.

I should have added that he has a diagnostic service for £35.00 +VAT which he will deduct from the price of a full vacuum and re-gas (£69 + VAT) when/if he does it.

Hey thanks Nigel. Yes m8 I put back the airbag fuse. When I hear near the engine with the bonnet up, as soon as i turn off the engine i hear a beep and then it goes off. I guess that is the compressor. Cheers for the link to autoaircon. Kwik Fit doing a deal at £49.95. So will be going to them after I have exhasuted what I can do. Lovely forum. Cheers

I wouldn't let kwik fit touch a lawn mower let alone some thing as complex as air con
as in life you get what you pay for

Thanks very much indeed. Price in this economic times is important at least for me. Spoke to the guy at Kwik fit and seems to be decent enough. I trust his sincerity.

DON'T DO IT - can I be clearer?
Kwik Fit are OK for tyres but they are not AC specialists. They will use the standard garage 'two blue canister' solution (all the generalists seem to have a system comprising two blue canisters and an instruction book).

The £49.00 offer is for a gas and lubricant recharge only nothing more. They will no fault find, gas-dye the system to find any leaks, vacuum it out, deodorise it and fill with exactly the right amount of refrigerant and lubricant. If there is a leak you will be spending £49.00 again in a few weeks.

Google 'Kwik Fit aircon problems' if this isn't convincing enough.

Not quite sure I get what you mean about the engine noise?

Do the revs change when you put a/c on?

Mine had a problem where the low pressure pipe had snapped away and needed replacing.

Have to agree on the Kwik Fit. You need a decent specialist or decent garage with the right knowhow.

The compressor clutch should make a distinct click as it engages for each cycle. The engine management system will detect the compressor as it engages but you may not notice much variation in engine speed.

My guess is that your AC system has leaked its refrigerant. If so the low pressure switch will detect that and disconnect electrical supply to the compressor clutch. As per advice given you should consult a vehicle AC specialist or independent garage. The technician will connect service hoses to the access ports on the AC pipes and determine if the system has refrigerant, or more likely not. If not, then the system has a leak which must be repaired. Quite likely a damaged condenser (behind the front intake grille) or pipe as these are common faults.

Concerning Kwik Fit. Their service level on vehicle AC is a basic one of recharging, top-up, and simple diagnosis. Most branches are equipped with industry standard refrigerant management machines which can perform those basic tasks. That basic service has its place and is useful but they are not an AC systems repairer. In other words, they should be able to diagnose a basic fault in the refrigeration side of the system but will probably recommend you take the vehicle to a garage to make the necessary repairs. If that garage also has AC service experience then they can complete the job for you. So you might ask, why not take the car to a decent independent garage in the first place!
