Hi. My 1.4 petrol note had a knock on the aircon pump so the previous owner has had bypassed the pump. The system had been serviced but lost gas almost immediately. Is the knock on the pump a common fault and what is the normal correction.1, If I replace the pump and regass the system should this work?
2. How difficult is it?
3. Is it worth it?
Cheers, Ged.
I have seen aircon pumps on ebay for about £40.

its more than likely the clutch, pumps do fail but it not that common a leak test, fix and recharge will be about 90 quid upwards

Defo the pump. Once disconnected from the belt the noise went away or is there some sort of clutch within the aircon system?

there's a clutch that connects the drive from the belt to the pump

The pump will be noisy if it is running and there is no gas, there is a pressure switch to stop this happening.

Another cause of a noisy pump is a blocked expansion valve.

Best to take the car to someone who has the right test equipment and the skills to diagnose and repair. Works out cheaper than throwing money at parts and having the system regassed over and over.

Don't forget that that belt drives other things too that can knock.
